Scandinavia is beautiful and serene. If you love boats and maritime history and if you love spending a lot of time on and by the sea, this trip is for you. Scandinavia is a special place and we will be visiting some very unique locations. We will be following the paths of the Vikings, as well as the birds!
The great tour of southern Scandinavia starts in Copenhagen, travels through southwest Sweden, visits Stockholm, Oslo and takes the overnight ferry through the Oslo Fjord back to Copenhagen. On this tour you will see and experience the dark forests of the Kullaberg Peninsula, the sunny seashore cliffs of Hovs Hallar, the cobblestone paths of Gamla Stan and visit 1,200 year old Viking boats. There will be time for birding, hiking, nature loving, exploring, shopping, wandering, resting, museum visits, boating, meeting locals and eating lots of herring. Day 1: Fly to Copenhagen
Flights are overnight so day one will be spent on the plane.
Day 2: Arrive in Copenhagen
We will arrive in Copenhagen in the morning. Copenhagen is a beautiful city, with great history and much to see.We will be staying in the heart of the city at the Ascot Hotel. Copenhagen has several large parks for seeing the local city birds.
Day 3: Copenhagen
This is a great city to tour on foot! There is a lot to see and do. We will be visiting Tivoli Gardens walking along the canals and visiting historic sites.
Day 4: Kullaberg Peninsula
It is a one hour train ride to Helsingor, then a 20 minute boat ride across the water to Sweden and then a one hour shuttle ride to the Kulla Peninsula. We will be staying at the Strandgården in Mölle.
Day 5: Kullaberg Peninsula
The Kulla Peninsula is a very beautiful part of Sweden. There are lots of birds and natural wonders here. Over 700 species of birds have been identified here. We will spend two days in Kulla exploring the sea coast and the big forests of the area. There are a lot of good adventures and sights to see here!
Day 6: Hallands Väderö
We will be taking a day trip to Torekov and out to the island of Hallands Väderö which is a special little island with hiking trails and woods and a beautiful rocky shoreline. From Torekov it is a short drive to Hovs Hallar for the night.
Day 7: Hovs Hallar
We will awake in the beautiful Hovs Hallar Nature Preserve, which has many miles of coastal trails to explore.
Day 8: Stockholm
It is a half day train ride to Stockholm. We will be staying on the Mälardrottningen, which is a 1924 yacht that was once the world’s largest motor yacht and now has been converted into a hotel. It is a treat to stay here.
Day 9: Stockholm
Our hotel is very near the historic part of Stockholm call Gamla Stan great old city streets to walk down and explore. The city of Stockholm is built on part of a large archipelago encompassing hundreds of islands.
Day 10: Oslo
From Stockholm it's a full day train ride through a very beautiful landscape to Olso. We will be staying at The Grand Hotel. Oslo has a great downtown walking mall with great shops and historic sites. There are beautiful gardens around the Royal Palace and also some great botanical gardens nearby. All are good places to spot local birds.
Day 11: Oslo
Just outside of Oslo there are several great birding areas. We will spend the day walking in the forests looking for birds.
Day 12: Oslo
Oslo has great museums. Today we will be visiting the Viking and Maritime museums. Here you will find some of the best preserved Viking ships and maritime history in Scandinavia. Also in the area is the Fram Museum, the Kon-Tiki Museum and the Norwegian Folk Museum. There is time to see them all.
Day 13: Ferry Boat
From Oslo we will be taking the boat back to Copenhagen. This is a 14 hour overnight cruise. The views through the Oslo Fjords are wonderful! There are good opportunities for bird sightings from the boat.
Day 14: Copenhagen
We arrive in Copenhagen in the early morning and we will have the day to revisit Copenhagen. We will be staying once again in the heart of the city at the Kong Frederick Hotel, which is the oldest hotel in Copenhagen.
Day 15: Fly Home
Flights usually leave in the morning, so getting to the airport and getting home is our only activity for the day.
