Tokyo and Central & Northern Honshū
This trip will be a cultural experience you will never forget! Japan is a country of wondrous mountains and volcanoes. Tucked in among these mountain slopes and valleys, the marvelous architecture of villages, shrines and temples create a very unique landscape. Japan has an ancient culture, but also is a country on the leading edge of the modern world. We will see the best of both worlds!
We start out this 20 day trip in Tokyo visiting some very beautiful parks and temples. We will spend most the trip touring through central Honshū where we will visit the temples of Nikko, Bandai-Asahi National Park, the snow monkeys of Yudanaka and Mount Fuji. We will end our trip in Kamakura and then back to Tokyo.
Highlights: 1) Walking peaceful forest footpaths to view birds while visiting temples and shrines. 2) Navigating through the busy streets of Tokyo. 3) Enjoying hot springs with Snow Monkeys.

You should budget approximately $500-$700 for meals and extras not included in tour. If you prefer fine dining, you should budget more.
Day 1: Fly to Tokyo (fly day)
We will cross the International Date Line and lose a day.
Day 2: Arrival in Tokyo (travel & leisure day)
Flights usually arrive in the late afternoon and it is about a 1.5 hour trip to the hotel, so we will be heading directly to our hotel for the evening. We will be staying at Ryokan Kangetsu.
Day 3: Tokyo (culture & birding day)
Today will be spent touring the city. Tokyo has amazing sites to see; from the very modern to beautiful parks and temples.
Day 4: Tokyo (culture & birding day)
We will spend the day exploring more of Tokyo’s beautiful gardens and birding spots.
Day 5: Nikkō (travel & culture day)
It is a 2 hour trip to Nikko. We will be staying at the Annex Turtle Hotori-An.
Day 6: Nikkō (culture & birding day)
Nikkō has been a sacred place since the 8th century. The shrines and temples here are some of the most beautiful in Japan. The area also has a nice forest and gardens for birding and tranquil walks.
Day 7: Nikkō (birding & adventure day)
There is a lot to see and do in this area and so we will spend another day exploring.
Day 8: Aizu-Wakamatsu (travel & leisure day)
It is about a 2 hour train ride to from Nikkō to Aizu-Wakamatsu. Aizu-Wakamatsu is a small town near the base of Bandai-san volcano and Bandai Asahi National Park.
Day 9: Aizu-Wakamatsu (birding & adventure day)
We will be taking day trips into the national park for hiking and wildlife watching.
Day 10: Aizu-Wakamatsu (birding & adventure day)
Beside incredible natural beauty in this area, Aizu-Wakamatsu has a interesting culture of its own. We will have plenty of things to do and see here.
Day 11: Yudanaka (travel & culture day)
It is a 3.5 hour train ride, through some very beautiful areas of Japan, to Nagano-Ken. The Nagano area is both full of natural wonders and traditional Japanese architecture.
Day 12: Yudanaka (snow monkey & birding day)
About 20 miles northeast of Nagano is the wonderful little town of Yudanaka. Yudanaka is famous for the Snow Monkeys that bath in the hot springs here.
Day 13: Yudanaka (snow monkey & birding day)
We will be spending our time in Yudanaka exploring the local countryside and hanging out with Snow Monkeys.
Day 14: Mount Fuji (travel & leisure day)
It is a 3.5 hour train ride from Nagano to the Mount Fuji area. We will be staying in the Fuji Go-ko region, which is an beautiful area among the lake s at the base of Mount Fuji.
Day15: Mount Fuji (birding & adventure day)
Mount Fuji is an ancient volcano that stands nearly 12,400 feet high. There are plenty of great hikes and sights to see in this area!
Day 16: Mount Fuji (birding & adventure day)
This will be another day of exploring the natural wonders of the Mount Fuji area and visiting some local villages.
Day 17: Kamakura (travel & birding day)
A short train and bus ride will bring us to the city of Kamakura. Kamakura has many impressive Buddhist Temples and shrines amidst lovely gardens and trees.
Day 18: Kamakura (culture & birding day)
The temples and shrines are spaced apart and most are connected by foot paths. This makes a great day of walking and exploring.
Day 19: Tokyo (travel & shopping day)
Back in Tokyo, we will have one last day to see the sights again and buy some great souvenirs and enjoy the city.
Day 20: Fly Home (tears & smile day)
Flights usually leave in the early evening and arrive in the states almost at the same time we left! We will have a relaxing last day in Tokyo.
